Earth Week, 2021

March 17, 2021:

COVID-19 restrictions may have forced us to swarm virtually, but decidedly did NOT prevent our thinker-bees from planning and hive preparation for several new projects. A few of our thinkers even managed to win grants and organize volunteers for upcoming projects. Here is a sampler:

  • Bill Link is involved with a group dedicated to developing a garden outside City Hall in memory of our friend and colleague Mayor Deanna Demuzio. He will bring more detailed information - and a call to service - to the April meeting.

  • A Public Works grant from Walmart to refurbish old and neglected lots may help fund a planned Community (vegetable) Garden.

  • Mary Tinder reports that MJM Electric will unveil a new pollinator garden in phases, beginning in April.

  • M Tinder also purchased 4 bat houses from the Walmart grant. Bill will be looking for hospitable locations for them.

  • Kathy Ruiter has been busy at Blackburn organizing Earth Week and other Spring activities.

  • Kathy also introduced ideas for a series of articles on trees and bees to be written by Blackburn intern Christina Sanderson, and software training program on three planting and maintenance.

  • Several members have volunteered to form a Bee City-Carlinville Speaker’s Bureau. A formal listing of (8-10) names, contact information, and details will be up on our site in the near future.

  • Two projects relating to the children are arousing some interest as well: one to develop a pollinator garden in memory of Elaine Link, an active educator and naturalist; the other to involve planting of a tree by each classroom. The class would become local experts on their tree species and how to care for it. Thanks to Cindy Tipps and Randy Tinder for these ideas.

  • Finally, Bill Link and Tree City-Carlinville president Paul Mihalek will meet with LCCC representatives to discuss a tree-planting cum pollinator-garden on their property.

August 5, 2020:

Trees Forever Illinois has selected our local Trees Forever Board and Bee City USA-Carlinville along with their volunteers to receive Outstanding Local Organization Awards for 2020. Kevin Bennett, Illinois Director for Trees Forever, came on August 5 to make the presentations.

It's Pollinator Week and here are the blooms at the train station today! These are plants we put in the ground in 2019, so they kinda like Carlinville, wouldn't you say? - Mary Tinder
